What to Expect During Assessment

Collaborative, comprehensive and clinically informed. ADHD assessment requires gathering information from multiple sources.

You’ll be asked to:

Supported living

Personal history

Provide personal history and symptom information.

Complex needs

Childhood insight

Involve an informant who knew you as a child (e.g. a parent).

Therapeutic support

Supporting evidence

Share school reports or input from other professionals, if available.

1. Once referred, you can expect:

✅ A review of your referral for completeness
✅ Allocation to an appropriate assessment pathway
Confirmation of referral acceptance and estimated wait time
Distribution of forms for you and your informant
✅ A choice between in-person or online appointments

2. Your assessment will involve:

🔵 Meeting a Psychiatrist/Doctor with ADHD expertise
🔵 Reviewing your mental and physical health, development, lifestyle, social and occupational functioning
🔵 Typically completed in 1–2 appointments depending on complexity
🔵 Diagnosis outcome: ADHD diagnosed, not diagnosed, or inconclusive
🔵 A full diagnostic report with optional letters for university, work or benefits

Understanding Other Possibilities

Support continues, even without a diagnosis. Some individuals may have symptoms caused by other factors.

A diagnosis may be inconclusive or not made due to:

☑️ Other mental or physical health issues
☑️ Lack of sufficient diagnostic criteria
☑️ Need for treatment of co-occurring conditions first

Possible co-occuring or overlapping conditions include:

➡️ Anxiety and mood disorders
➡️ PTSD or trauma
➡️ Substance misuse
➡️ Neurological conditions
➡️ Thyroid problems, diabetes, anaemia
➡️ Sleep disorders
➡️ Autism, OCD, intellectual disabilities

If ADHD is not diagnosed, your clinician will explain why and offer recommendations for further support or alternative referral pathways.

If ADHD is not diagnosed

Your clinician will explain why and offer recommendations for further support or alternative referral pathways.

ADHD Treatment: Medication & Monitoring

Collaborative titration to find the right dose. Titration is the gradual adjustment of medication to manage symptoms with minimal side effects.

The process includes:

✳️ Starting on a low dose and increasing gradually
✳️ Monitoring symptoms, side effects, BP and pulse (we supply a monitor)
✳️ Completing symptom trackers and engaging in regular reviews
✳️ Receiving a written treatment plan to share with your GP

You’ll remain with the same prescriber throughout where possible.
Controlled medications are prescribed monthly.

Staying Engaged in Your Care

During titration, your active participation is essential. By attending reviews, sharing timely feedback, and responding to communications, you help us tailor your treatment safely and effectively.

Your responsibilities during titration:

✅ Attend reviews
✅ Provide timely feedback and monitoring
✅ Respond to communications

Why engagement matters:

➡️ Missed feedback delays progress
➡️ Limited resources require us to prioritise patients
➡️ Discharge may occur if engagement drops without reason.

If you choose to stop treatment, please inform your prescriber so we can close the episode safely and notify your referrer.

What Happens After Titration?

Transitioning ADHD care to your GP

Once your dosage is stable:

✅ You will remain with us until you are stable on your medication
✅ A final review will be conducted
✅ A Shared Care Agreement (SCA) will be offered to your GP
✅ Your GP will take over prescribing and monitoring

Ongoing care will vary depending on your health authority. Your review letter will outline expectations for annual reviews.

Additional Support After Assessment

Beyond diagnosis and medication. While SSC is not funded to provide non-pharmacological interventions for ADHD, we understand how vital this support can be.

We may signpost you to:

✅ Relevant self-help resources
✅ Community-based ADHD support
✅ Online tools or external providers suited to your needs

These will be shared with you and your referrer (where appropriate) after your appointment.

Managing ADHD Expectations

Real-world improvement, not perfection. While ADHD treatment can lead to significant improvement, it won’t always eliminate every challenge.

Avoid the pitfall of perfection:

✳️ Track functional progress, not just symptoms
✳️ Allow time for your brain to adjust
✳️ Avoid constant medication changes

Treatment works best when:

✅ You set realistic goals
✅ You weigh benefits vs. side effects
✅ You understand that improvement can be gradual

We’re here to help you define what “good enough” looks like for you.
